Ganga – Tributaries and Distributaries

Ganga is most important lifeline of India with a length of 2655km it is also considered the most sacred river in India. In this article I am briefing about the important tributaries and distributaries of the river.

Tributary is a river that joins the main river while distributary is a river that parts its ways from the main river.

Tributaries of Ganga :

  • Bhagirathi (Source of Ganga), Origin- Gaumukh
  • Alaknanda – Second source stream of Ganga, Joined by Dhauliganga at Vishnuprayag, Pindar at Karnprayag, Mandakini at Rudraprayag then Bhagirathi at Devprayag
  • Yamuna – 1376km, Origin – Yamunotri Glacier, Second largest tributary
  • Chambal – 960km, tributary of Yamuna river, it also defines boundary between rajasthan and madhya pradesh, cleanest river of India.
  • Sindh- 470km, tributary of Yamuna river.
  • Betwa – 590km
  • Tamsa
  • Ghaghara – 1080km, Largest tributary of Ganga by volume.
  • Son – 784km origin- Amarkantak, joins Ganga at Patna
  • Gandaki- 630km, Origin – Deep Gorge in Himalayas
  • Kosi- 729km
  • Brahmaputra – 916km in India, Teesta and Manas are tributaries of Brahmaputra.

Distributaries :

Hoogly : 260km passes through Kolkata
