When is Mahindra launching the Thar 5-door?

Keeping up with its tradition of revealing or launching vehicles on Independence Day, Mahindra will likely unveil the Thar 5-door on August 15 and announce its prices, too. Official bookings are expected to commence on the same day, although some dealers have been accepting pre-bookings.

Will Mahindra Thar 5-door get the 1.5-litre diesel engine?

Yes, the Thar 5-door will carry over all existing engine options from the Thar 3-door. That means you’ll get the 1.5-litre diesel engine in RWD guise with a manual gearbox; there’ll also be the 2.0-litre turbo-petrol and the 2.2-litre diesel engines with their respective manual and automatic gearboxes in 4×4 form. The 2.0-litre petrol engine could also be offered in RWD configuration, just like in the regular Thar. These engines, however, could be in a higher state of tune to account for the additional weight.

How will the Thar 5-door differ from the regular Thar?

The Thar 5-door will have a longer wheelbase, which means that the ladder-frame chassis will be more closely related to that of the Scorpio N’s. It will also likely carry over the Scorpio N’s more sophisticated suspension setup, including the frequency-dependent dampers, allowing for better on-road manners.

Will the Thar 5-door be better equipped than the regular Thar?

Yes, it will pack a bunch of additional features, including a larger 10.25-inch touchscreen, LED projector headlamps, a 360-degree camera, push-button start, front and rear center armrests, leather seat upholstery, rear AC vents, six airbags instead of two, and even a sunroof. A 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster and ADAS features are also likely to be part of the mix. The Thar 5-door will also get rear disc brakes compared to just the front disc brakes in the regular Thar.

Will the Thar 5-door be a 7-seater SUV?

Despite the added wheelbase, the Thar 5-door will only be a two-row SUV with a 5-seat configuration. The second row will feature a bench seat with a centre armrest as opposed to the two individual seats in the regular Thar. The added length would allow for plenty of boot space, which remains a limitation on the regular Thar.
