What is Bharat Ratna ?
- Bharat Ratna is India’s highest civilian award.
- First awarded in 1954
- The award is designed in the shape of a Peepal leaf with Bharat Ratna inscribed on it in Devanagri script in the Sun figure.
- On the reverse side Satyamev Jayate has been written on Hindi with an inscription of state emblem.
- The emblem the sun and the rim are of Platinum. The inscriptions are in burnished bronze.
- Indira Gandhi was the youngest person alive at the time of receiving the award and Rajiv Gandhi is the youngest overall to receive the award.
- D.k. karve was the eldest person alive to receive the award and Vallabhai Patel is the eldest overall.
- First naturalised Indian citizen to recieve the award is Mother Teresa in 1980.
- Abdul Gaffar Khan was the first foreigner to be honoured with Bharat Ratna in 9187 and later Nelson Mandella 1990.
