The Bogibeel bridge :

The Bogibeel bridge is the longest rail cum road bridge in India having a total length of 4940 meters. It is built on the mighty Brahmaputra river in Assam, 17km away from Dibrugarh town. This is 2 tier bridge having three lane Road on the and top double length broad gauge railway track on the bottom. 

The bridge design was proposed in 2002 during the reign of Sri Atal Bihari Vajpayee and the construction began the same year. However it took a lot of time for this bridge to be completed. During the government of Narendra Modi it was given a rapid pace and completed in 2018. The total estimated cost of this Bridge is Rs. 5920 crores. 

Connectivity features of this bridge 

  1. The bridge reduces the vast distance of 444 kilometre between Dibrugarh and Guwahati (capital of Assam) by 55 kilometers. 
  2. The bridge links the Rangia – Murkongselek section of the North East Frontier Railway on the North bank of the river and the Lumding – Dibrugarh section on the South Bank. 
  3. It connects NH 37 ( Assam- monipur) and NH 52( Punjab- Karnataka), hence improving connectivity with the southern states of the country
  4. The bridge reduces distance between dibrugarh and Delhi 
  5. The bridge is also useful asset for Indian army as it facilitates speedy transportation of troops and essential supplies to the Tibetan border in Arunachal Pradesh.
