The payload aboard the orbiter detects Argon

Weeks after the Vikram lander failed to land softly on the lunar surface, ISRO Chief K Sivan has said, this is not going to be the end ISRO is determined to perform a soft landing very soon in the future. Chandrayaan 2 mission is still considered to be 90% successful as the orbiter will keep orbiting and sending us important updates. Recently the orbiter has discovered Argon 40 in lunar atmosphere.

  • Argon is an inert gas which has been detected by Chandrayaan 2 orbiter ; ISRO said. The gas detected is an isotope of Argon, Argon 40. Argon 40 originates from radioactive disintegration of Potassium 40.
  • The Chandra’s Atmospheric Composition Explorer, payload of the orbiter detected the presence of Argon 40 from an altitude of 100 km.
  • The orbiter has measured the sunlight radiation bouncing off the moon and mapped the lunar surface.
  • The orbiter of Chandrayaan 2 will continue to be operational until next seven years. The discoveries made by the shuttle will help in various ways. It will also discover the presence and amount of iced water ont moon.
