Grand Chord of the Indian Railways is :
In two parts –
1. Howrah – Gaya – Delhi line and
2. Howrah – Allahabad – Mumbai line
- Links Sitarampur and Pandeet Deen Dayal Upadhyayay Junction, Stretch of 450 km.
- Fully electrified and triple line from Mughalsarai to Dehri.
- Double line from Dehri to Asansol.
- Lifeline of the country.
- Up Direction – Movement of coal and Steel from eastern to northern sections of the country.
- Down Direction – Movement of food grains, fertilizers, and empty wagons.
Area – It includes the Chota Nagpur Plateau and the fertile Gangetic Plains of Bihar.
- Calcutta – Delhi route became operational in 1866.
- To handle the increasing traffic Grand Chord was planned.
- Grand Chord opened by Lord Minto in 1906 who was the Viceroy and Governor General of India.
- Construction cost – 415 Lacs which is equivalent to ₹12 billion or US$150 million in 2020.
Major Trains on this route :
3 Rajdhani from Bhubaneshwar, Ranchi and Howrah
Freight traffic particularly coal handled by Dhanbad division.
