By the end of 2018, 2.39 crore households out of unelectrified 2.49 crore households were electrified. The target was to achieve 100% electrification by 26 January 2019. Even after full pace of work, coordination of state government and the distributing companies (discoms) 10.4 lac households are left to be electrified. These households are majorly in states of Chattisgarh, Meghalaya, Rajasthan and Assam.
It is good to see that the state Uttar Pradesh has achieved 100% electrification by the end of 2018. The state has also launched a campaign known as Saubhagya Rath in which a vehicle runs through the interiors of the state and checks if any household is left for electricity. People have an option to dial 1912 in case they face any problem with electric connection.
The Saubhagya Scheme:
Pradhan Mantri Sahaj Bijli Har Ghar Yojana was announced in October 2017. At the time of announcement 30 million ( 3 crore) households were not electrified The scheme has developed IT based management system. It has achieved 95% of the target till now. Villages of India were electrified 100% by April 2018. Two schemes were implemented seriously to achieve this :
Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Gram Jyoti Yojana
Rajiv Gandhi Gram Vidyutikaran Yojana
States with 100% electrification are : Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal, U.P. and Odisha. This is according to a survey by TERI ( The Energy Resource Institute).
Problems faced during the work:
It was really an uphill task to achieve this figure of completion in electrification in such a limited time of work. The efforts of both central and state government in this direction is really commendable. At the same time we cannot ignore the commitment of distributing companies. They had to face severe problems like;
Material Supply at the site
Resources Availability
Management
Maoists problem
Cooperation
Irregular terrain
Even after completing the project they are concerned about the recovery of the investment they put in. The discoms have to keep a balance between their investment and recovery to an average of 15%. This is the only condition required to claim the benefits under nUjjawala Disaco aAssuranace Yojana ( UDAY).
