The construction of the Pamban bridge which connects Rameshwaram island or the pamban island with mainland India started in February 2020. The reconstructed bridge now has hundreds spans across the sea out of which 99 spans will be of 18.3 meters long and one span will be 72.5 metres long. The new constructed bridge will be 3 meters higher than the existing bridge.
The specialty of this iconic bridge is 72 metre long vertical lift span. This will allow lifting of this span by 17 meters to allow ships to pass below the lifted bridge. The vertical lift span has been constructed for double track. The total length of the bridge is 2.078 kilometers.
