The tools used in CNC Machining (Turning) are named in a certain coded language. Each code used in the name has specific meaning. This article goes though the explanation of the codes used in Tool Nomenclature.
Tool Nomenclature :
Follow the numbers with the code and find its explanation below ;
1. Insert Clamping System – The given figure is a P type insert clamping system. Other types of clamping are – S,M and C.
2. C stands for insert shape which can be Octagon, Pentagon, Hexagon or Round
3. L stands for Holder Style
4. N stands for Insert clearance angle
5. R stands for cutting direction R – Right, L – Left
6. 25 is the cutting edge height
7. 25 is the Shank width
8. M in M12 is the total length of the tool holder i.e. 150 mm ( K = 120 mm ) , 12 is the cutting edge length of the insert
Insert type procedure
1. 2nd letter – C in this case
2. 4th letter – N in this case
3, 8th letter – M in this case
4. Chip breaker type – ( G,T,S,M )
5. 9th letter – 12 in this case
6. Insert thickness
7. Insert Nose Radius ( 0.1, 0.2, 0.4, 0.8 )
